RideshareOnline.com Winner Adventure!
06/11/2009

In September 2007, Dawn Burns from WA State DSHS – DCS was the lucky winner of a Costa Rica trip in the RideshareOnline.com promotion. With a son that was diagnosed with a serious neurological disease called Pseduotumor Cerebri, Dawn was a bit nervous to take the trip. Her son, Ty, unable to start high school, suffers from continuous and very painful headaches.

Making the decision to go on the trip and take their son was a hard decision, but a great one! On a beautiful day and her husband’s birthday, the family ventured out for some zip line fun over the hot and humid rain forest in beautiful Costa Rica! The zip line tour was approximately an hour and distracted her son long enough to not notice the pain. He absolutely loved it and now wants to be a guide down there.

To add to her son’s enjoyment, Dawn got stuck on the 6th zip line. Hanging 1,000 feet over the rainforest for over 20 minutes, Dawn was terrified. After being rescued, Dawn did not want to go on the last zip line alone. Unfortunately for her, the last zip line got too close to the ground with two people, so she had to go on it alone. As she slid down the last zip line, she was greeted with cheers from the people in her tour. Being the talk of the camp afterwards and seeing her son’s amusement made it all worth it!

Dawn’s family completely enjoyed the trip including fantastic weather, wonderful and gracious people and the amazing howling monkeys, alligators, iguanas, birds, and sea life. Pictured to the right is Ty with a wild pet boar named Filomena. He enjoyed putting sand on her and feeding her.

Three months after the trip, Ty had major brain surgery and they put a shunt in his head to help relieve the intracranial pressure. Recuperating at home, Ty’s next move will be to start therapy at Seattle Children’s Hospital with the hopes of starting high school next fall.

“Winning this trip was especially wonderful because it brought our son some well needed excitement, something to look forward to, and a few hours of relief,” smiled Dawn. “He’ll always remember the zip line story, especially his mother getting stuck – he thought it was hilarious!”
